Guess what, everyone, Festival has started! This Friday marks the first week of the End of Summer Festival. Tonight’s them: Wacky Tie Party. What is Festival, you ask? What a wonderful question.

Every year, we have two Festivals; one to kick off the end of winter (Hooray!) and one to say “So long” to summer (Bummer, man!). During Festival, you have the chance to earn points to win cool prizes at the end of the five weeks. This may include a fancy dinner for two, a brand new pair of dance shoes, or even both. The points are broken down so that you earn different amounts based on what you do. This can be anything from participating at our parties in games and theme attire to buying classes and bringing guests! The top ten point earners go head to head against each other and finally the winners are crowned. Every week, there is a theme for the Friday night party and students (and staff!) are suggested to dress accordingly.

For the End of Summer Festival this year, our theme parties are as follows:

Back To School

Hillbilly Rock

Pirates vs. Captains

And finally—Our Luau. Get your grass skirts!

So if you begin to notice the leaves change color, don’t fret! Here at Fred Astaire, we will keep the party going for weeks and weeks and when Old Man Winter does come; our floor will be nice and warm.

San Juan Championship proves fun for competitors and spectators

Congratulations to our Fred Astaire competitors who competed in the Fred Astaire World Championships in San Juan, Puerto Rico! The competition was held from July 20 – 24^th and hosted an array of dancers from all different levels and even some international champions. From the competitor floor to professional shows and even Salsa to spice up the night, the goings on of that weekend provided unending entertainment for our students.

We want to first give a shout out to our competitors who brought down the house during the four days of intense dancing. Overall, Fred Astaire South Indianapolis brought home 156 firsts, 28 seconds, and 20 thirds amongst other awards. Phyllis Dumm finished the competition undefeated and has taken firsts in all of the competitions this year. She was joined by seven other dancers from our studio.

Along with the eight competitors, we also had five spectators who joined us on the trip to cheer on those who were on the floor and also to take part in the festivities which surrounded the competition. The arrival of everyone back to Indianapolis has left an indescribable excitement that is still bouncing off the walls even today. Already, plans are being made for the next year and we hope that you can join us!

Dancing Through Ages and Around the World

Few can say they see themselves still dancing at 88. Even fewer would say they would be competing at a world competition at that age; but for Phyllis Dumm, that’s exactly what she is doing—this July. The Fred Astaire World Championship will be held July 20th through the 24th in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As well as hosting dancers from around the world (such as those seen on Dancing with the Stars) the competition will also have attendees from right here in Indianapolis. Among those going will be Phyllis, who has been dancing for the last 21 years. Yes, you read that right. She started dancing when she was 67.
            Having retired the same year that she took her first lesson, Phyllis has since used dance as a weekly activity. “It’s a matter of keeping going,” she says. “I enjoy the music, rhythm, and exercise.” This will be the third competition she has attended just this year after having taken first in all of her divisions from the past two. She stands undefeated.
            The youngest competitor attending the competition from Indianapolis will be Stephanie Smith, a recent high school graduate. “Ballroom is my life. When I go out to the floor, I just feel the music and dance my heart out.”
            Stephanie has been dancing for the last four years and recently won the Showcase Scholarship at the Midwest Dancesport Competition where she also took first in all of her divisions.
            Along with Stephanie and Phyllis, sixteen other competitors and spectators will be heading down to San Juan for the event. For more information on this competition or dancing, please contact Fred Astaire South Indianapolis at (317) 783-5260.
